Types of Sedation and Anesthesia:

• Conscious Sedation — Patients respond in at least a purposeful manner to verbal commands alone or by mild stimulation. No assistance is needed to maintain breathing.
• Deep Sedation — Characterized by depressed consciousness. Patients are not easily woken up and may require help in maintaining a patent airway.
• General Anesthesia — Patients are not aroused by painful stimulation. The patient often requires assistance in maintaining a patent airway.
